Latin and Rhythm Dances gain inspiration from Cuban dance styles of the early 1900s, combined with some African and Hispanic steps and rhythms. Rhythm and Latin Dances are known for their fast-paced movements and dancing positions that require constant close contact between partners. These styles include the Bolero, Cha-Cha, Swing, Jive, Mambo, Paso Doble, and Rumba (or Rhumba). Except for the Bolero, these are all lively, colorful dancing styles.
Smooth and Standard Dances cover the styles that most people associate with ballroom dancing. They are styles that focus on the elegance and beauty of the couple as the dancers move about the dance floor. The International Standard style of dancing, which includes the Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, Viennese Waltz, and traditional Waltz, emphasizes a closed position as the couple dances. The American Smooth style allows for more open dancing positions and movements where the couple dances separately. This makes American Smooth popular at social dances and major competitions.
Country Western Dances are popular across the country at nightclubs and parties. They are often easy to learn and can be done alone or with a partner. Many Country Western Dances are faster-rhythm takes on more traditional dance styles. This was born out of Southern dancers’ attempts to make their dancing style fit the tempo of popular Country Western songs.
Some dance styles don’t fall into any of the other categories. These dances were often made to fit a certain style of music and don’t have their roots in Latin or European dance styles. The specialty dances that Arthur Murray Dance Centers of Cranford and Hillsborough offers are the Argentine Tango (different from the traditional Tango), Nightclub 2-Step, Polka, and Slow Dance.
