For over 100 years, men, women, and children have been learning how to dance from Arthur Murray Dance schools. Today, the Arthur Murray Dance Center of Cranford continues that tradition for the people of New Jersey. Our world-class instructors work with people of all ages and skill levels. We even offer a complimentary lesson for new students. Our classes are also popular for couples with an upcoming wedding. We also teach one-on-one classes for any students who desire more interaction with our instructors. One of the more popular dance types that we teach is Latin dance.
Today’s Latin dance is a melting pot of styles from several different regions. Cuban dancing from the early 1900s has had a strong influence, combined with traditional Hispanic and African steps. The common theme found throughout the majority of Latin dance types is fast-paced movement and constant close contact between dance partners. Latin dance is lively and flowing, while at the same time highly structured.
Latin Dancing Styles
At the Arthur Murray Dance Center of Cranford, we offer a number of different Latin styles of dance. The Rumba is a style that developed in poor neighborhoods in Cuba and is now popular throughout the world. Also of Cuban origin is the Cha-Cha, an energetic dance that was named after the sound made by a dancer’s feet. The Tango originated in Argentina and Uruguay, and it is traditionally danced in open embrace, with space between partners, or close embrace, where partners stay connected at the chest or hip. Developed in New York City, the Salsa combines the rhythm and steps of a number of other Latin dances to create an entirely new style. While the styles discussed above are some of our more popular, we also offer classes on the Mambo, Bolero, Paso Doble, Jive, and Swing.
